Part D Tier 1: Preferred Generic
Tier 1 has the lowest overall copayment. A copayment is a fixed amount you pay for a covered health care service after you’ve paid your yearly deductible.
To understand how copayments are determined, think of it relative to the type of drug. Generic prescriptions are the least expensive and are essentially the “off-brand” version of more expensive drugs. You will typically pay around $1 to $3 for drugs in this tier.
Part D Tier 2: Non-Preferred Generic
Non-preferred generic drugs are a step above preferred generic in cost. If there is not a preferred generic version of the drug you need, it will likely fall in this category. Drugs in this tier will cost you $7 to $11.
Tier 3: Preferred Brand-Name
Preferred brand-name drugs are your next option if no generic versions are available. They will still cost less than tier 4 drugs because they are preferred but are still more costly than the previous two tiers. You will pay around $38 to $42 for drugs in this tier.
Tier 4: Non-Preferred Brand-Name
Non-preferred brand-name drugs are the most expensive version of prescriptions. They are still not as costly as the specialty tier, but these are your last resort for your standard options. You will pay around a 45% to 50% coinsurance fee for this tier.
Tier 5: Specialty
Specialty drugs will also cost you a 45% to 50% coinsurance fee. However, due to their production and targeted illnesses, they will cost more than non-preferred brand-name drugs. So, the percentage you have to pay will be overall greater.
